The AUDIT also provides a framework for intervention to help risky drinkers reduce or cease alcohol consumption and thereby avoid the harmful consequences of alcohol.
The AUDIT can also help identify alcohol dependence and some specific consequences of harmful drinking. It is particularly designed for health care practitioners and a range of health settings, but with suitable instructions it can be self-administered or used by non-health professionals.
Since the AUDIT was first published in 1989, the test has fulfilled many of the expectations that inspired its development. Its reliability and validity have been established in research conducted in a variety of settings and in many different nations. It is considered to be a highly suitable screening instrument for the whole range of alcohol problems in primary care and is the only screening test specifically designed for international use. It has been translated into many languages, including Turkish, Greek, Hindi, German, Dutch, Polish, Japanese, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Danish, Flemish, Bulgarian, Chinese, Italian, and Nigerian dialects.
AUDIT has been used in primary care research and in epidemiological studies for the estimation of prevalence in the general population as well as specific institutional groups (e.g., hospital patients, primary care patients).
